9/12/2023 0 Comments Tesla gear shift“As one team, in one place, working on common challenges, we are able to swiftly make decisions." “We are changing the way that we work," said Kato, the group’s head. They are to be designed and produced by a new EV-dedicated group started in May by Toyota’s recently appointed chief executive, Koji Sato. The next-generation vehicles will start hitting the market in 2026. The automaker is also working on a variety of lower-cost and longer-range batteries. One EV technology in development allows the driver to customize the revving sounds and driving feel so they resemble a sports car or a classic car. While the carmaker sells only a few EVs now and has said it doesn’t believe the world is ready yet to go all-in on the technology, it has said it aims to sell 3.5 million EVs in 2030. The back-to-the-future stick-shift model is one of the technologies Toyota showed off at an event to pitch its fleet of EVs coming in the next few years. Kato said the features will “amplify the fun of driving." The system generates fake sounds and simulated gear changes as well as genuine stalling if a rookie driver fumbles the controls, although the company is still debating whether to keep that last feature when it commercializes the technology, a spokeswoman said. Today, most gasoline-powered cars have an automatic transmission that takes care of gear changes, while EVs are powered by near-silent electric motors that don’t require gear-shifting.įor drivers who like the sense of control in a stick shift and who savor the engine’s growl as it responds to the human touch, Toyota is using simulation software. They require the driver to manually change gears as the car changes speed and to operate a clutch. Manual-transmission or stick-shift cars powered by a gasoline engine were once standard. When you propagate this foolishness (that the Tesla/Leaf have no transmission) you only contribute to the spread of this ignorance.“We want to be able to deliver a sense of ‘wow’ to customers," said Takero Kato, head of a new EV group at Toyota, of the simulated stick shift and other models under development. But I'll ask again, without any expectation of an answer "How does the fact that a transmission is single speed disqualify it from being a transmission?" Can you show me any acceptable definition of the term that includes that requirement? Are you aware that helicopters have single speed reduction gearing that is referred to as the transmission? Are you aware that my boat has single speed reduction gearing? Clearly these authors are ignorant (it's often clear from the whole article that this is the case). There are also articles in pop auto mags and on the net that explain that BEV don't have transmissions because they are single speed. Someone immediately replied that the dealer was trying to rip him off because the Leaf doesn't have a transmission. NIssan engineers, of course, refer to the transmission in the Leaf as its transmission but I do find things like the tale of the guy who posted that when he heard noises from his Leaf and took it in the dealer told him the transmission would have to be replaced. I'll have to cut you some slack here as this particular bit of ignorance is quite prevalent. Among the ignorant, i agree, there is a good chance that I would be misunderstood but then I am usually misunderstood by the ignorant in any context. service) I think even you can see that it is probably best if I refer to it by the name Tesla uses. As the most likely context would be in talking to someone at Tesla about it (e.g. Anyone who knows anything about automotive engineering would understand me if referred to the transmission in a Tesla as a transmission.
